ANNA VIOLA HALLBERG

CONTEMPORARY ART AND INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM STUDIES
I relate to the tradition of time based art and have a special interest for the transgression between private and public and how art can be a critical tool to revel the tension and/or covert layers in society. In my practice I examine the relation between governance and individual in the public sphere with a strong presents of Social Activism. Central to all work is the constructing of legacy via oral history and visual imagery into the common domains, forming not only archives on our present and past but also our understanding and forming the future. The works are often presented in spatial installations interlocked with seminars or workshops.

The collaborate process is an important part of Hallberg’s practice. Anna Viola Hallberg and Annica Karlsson Rixon are collaborating on an installation trilogy Resonance, State of Mind and Code of Silence dealing with socially and culturally constructed identity-based groups in contemporary society. Currently they are producing a book on State of Mind which is also part of Karlsson Rixons Phd dissertation in Artistic Research. Hallberg has also worked with artists, dancers and filmmakers such as: Madeleine Hatz (US/SE), Bjorn Perborg (SE), Christine Bergman (US), Dorte Olesen (SE), Barbara Hammer (US) and Mia Engberg and Ira Anufrieva (BY/SE).

Hallberg is working as a curator for the city of Mariestad for 2012 it is a communal mural project with 4 cities in Skaraborg region and two in Mexico. During 2011 it was CityArtLab/Stadslaboratoriet Mariestad a temporary kunsthalle was established to host the core of the exploratory social sculpture. As part of this Valand School of Fine Arts, University of Gothenburg was brought on to provide a critical voice with an international summer program located in the city.

Anna Viola Hallberg graduated 2003 from, Stockholm University, Sweden. Hallberg has a B.A in Curatorial and Cinema Studies with a M.Sc in International Museum Studies, University of Gothenburg, 2008. Writing her thesis on contemporary art in museum exhibitions outside the paradigm of the art institution. She is also a graduate of Stockholm Film School. She has worked both in experimental documentary film as well as in advertising in the US (New York) and Sweden. Her works and has been shown in Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Turkey, US, Canada and Sweden. From a museum studies perspective general issues of access and collecting are of interest as well as the transition between contemporary art and heritage concerns from both Cultural and Natural perspective. Highlighting conditions and criteria for contemporary art in such a context. The two disciplines, Museum Studies and contemporary art are not to be regarded as separate entities rather as aspects of the public space being examined. She is socially and politically engaged artist interested in innovative public practices and collaborations.

Hallberg is a member of KRO/Swedish Artists National Organization

Exerpts from reviews:
Angelica Olsson on State of Mind and collaborations, Paletten, 2010

Cecilia Blomberg on State of Mind, Swedish Radio, Culture News, 2008

Rikard Ekholm on Resonance, Svenska Dagbladet, 2006

Lotta Bergström, on Resonance, Hallands Nyheter, 2006

Mårten Arndtzen on Resonance, Expressen, 2006

Astrid von Rosen on Resonance, Goteborgs Posten, 2006
Tåg passerar, vågor rullar in, i en skulptur snurrar planeterna i solsystemet.
